What is hiding in your plant-based “milk”?

You may be thinking, “Cow’s dairy has fortified vitamins as well. Why is that okay and this isn’t? My family needs the calcium and other minerals & vitamins that are essential in their milk.”

You are not wrong, although not all milk and dairy products are made the same. The same goes for plant-based and pasteurization processes for cow’s dairy, (but that’s for another post 😉).

For families who need to avoid cow’s dairy, there are cleaner and healthier alternatives to choose from. Your main source of vitamins and minerals should NOT be coming from a plant-based “milk” - a balanced whole food diet will help your family reach their daily needs.

Be sure to switch up your plant-based alternatives often to get a variety of benefits each of those substitutes offer. Plant-based protein, minerals, and vitamins contain roughly half of the bioavailability that animal derived foods have. Adding & rotating other alternatives can help you reach your desired daily intake.

Now, what’s up with pea protein??

Consumer health advocate Colleen Kavanagh spoke on pea protein recently on the podcast, Heal Thy Self. It is NOT CLEAN - it is one of the dirtiest proteins available. There are a ton of heavy metal residue especially in the organic ones.

Although organic peas are grown organically, their molecule bonds are so tight in their protein and carbohydrate biomarkers, manufacturers have to use a harsh chemical to break them apart in order to make pea protein. That chemical is so toxic that the waste water is illegal in Canada and the U.S. So peas are sent to China where they have heavy metals allowed in processing and in their soil, as well as in their water. The contamination started when they would process the organic ingredients and send them back our way. There is unfortunately no way to avoid the additional contaminates when we need to outsource to China in order for pea protein to be sold in the US.
